The Rock of Ifach

As stated by the famous Spanish poet Gabriel Miró: "Ifach is a beautiful tapestry, of fiery bronze and glorious stone. The rocks are alight and sculpted by the wind. A Brigantine apse that cuts silently through the waters…"

The Peñón d'Ifach is a 50.000m2 Rock that juts out of the sea and is joined to the mainland by an isthmus. It reaches a height of 332 m and was officially declared a Nature Park in 1987 thanks to the rich variety of flora and fauna.

The Rock of Ifach is ideal for hiking and climbing. Upon reaching the summit it is easy to see why it has been favoured as a lookout throughout history. Towards the Southeast one can gaze out over the sea and towards the Northeast the salt flats and the plain are easily discernible.

The Salt Flats

Everybody is aware of the importance of salt in ancient times. This is one of the reasons why the Mediterranean was the cradle of civilization. Mankind has flourished in part thanks to the discovery of the different uses of salt.

The importance of the salt flats in Calpe dates back to Roman times, when the salt was used to preserve the fish which was first kept at the "Baños de la Reina" and "Morelló" fish farms. Salt was an item of vital importance, used not only to season food but most importantly to preserve fish and meats.

Visitors may take a stroll around the salt flats whilst observing the flora and fauna of the region.

The Toix Mountain

The summit of Toix is accessible by road and offers a magnificent vantage point from which the whole of the coastal area can be made out, from the tip of Moraira till the lights of Benidorm. This alone makes it a worthwhile family outing.
